چکیده

We have investigated the response of an argon-methane proportional counter to monochromatic X-rays in the range 99-277 eV . The apparent nonlinearities in mean pulse height as a function of photon energy and the detailed shape of the pulse height distribution for each energy can be predicted quite precisely using the extensive atomic data available for argon. Based on this understanding, we propose a semiempirical system for using a limited amount of calibration data to predict the full response of counters employing less well characterized gasses . Such accurate models of proportional counter response are required to maximize the spectral information that can be derived from observed pulse height distributions .

X-ray Imaging Detector Using Silicon Field Emission Tip Array Energy Conversion

Existing x-ray detecting technologies can be classified as either photon-counting (digital) or integrating (analog). Multi-wire proportional counters (MVVPC) are digital detectors that have advantages such as high quantum sensitivity, high dynamic range, and high intrinsic energy resolution, and have a wide range of applications. However, most photon-counting detectors rely on gas conversion of...

High-efficiency single-photon detectors.

Visible light photon counters (VLPCs) and solid-state photomultipliers (SSPMs) are high-efficiency single-photon detectors which have multi-photon counting capability. While both the VLPCs and the SSPMs have inferred internal quantum efficiencies above 93%, the actual measured values for both the detectors were in fact limited to less than 88%, attributed to in-coupling losses. We are currently...

Single-photon detection by rod cells of the retina

At low light levels, the visual system detects and counts photon absorptions with a reliability close to limits set by statistical fluctuations in the number of absorbed photons. Thus the rod photoreceptors that provide the input signals to the dark-adapted visual system act as nearly perfect photon counters. This elegant performance is possible because light detection in the rods satisfies fou...
